62 taking care of 83 yo mother and still working fulltime mostly from home b/c she can no longer be left alone due to her dementia (blessed to work for a company that is supportive). I get 4 weeks of vaca that I thought I'd be able to use for travel now that my kids are established. My daughter and I talked for years about traveling internationally together. She is the only one who can handle mom, though, so we can never go anywhere together. Bless her, she adjusts her work schedule twice a year (they are also supportive) so I can go somewhere quiet with my dog for a week to recharge. My health is suffering, though, from the stress. Huge weight gain, high blood pressure, depression, stomach issues from anxiety - feel like I have aged 5 years for every one of the 5 I have been caring for her. I worry that something will happen to me before mom goes.

I’m 72 & my Mom is 96-she said who will take care of me if you die? It’s all about her. I said you have 3 other children. She said I don’t think they’re capable. No kidding

Exactly! 62 taking care of an 85 year old. I feel you with the back pain! Honestly it’s a blessing when my mom goes to bed so I can get a break.😢😢

I’m a spouse..husband just took father to ER from rehab after a broken hip. His blood count is low so he needs a transfusion. It never ends. Always on a holiday. We’re 60’s. They will outlive us due to the stress. I can’t do it.

Agree 100% - this is the final quarter of our lives if we are lucky. Our lives should now be planning for retirement, downsizing, and wrapping up loose ends, travel while we can. All that is on on hold with every ounce of extra time spent on caregiving to the point of utter exhaustion. I fear my life is over as I knew it, just as my final chapter has has arrived. Why does our culture put this on the oldest vs the younger generations? We are not physically and mentally equipped to carry this kind of load

Im 45 raising teenagers and been taking care of my mom for almost 6 months and it’s not fair to them or my husband. Not fair to me either. My mom was never a caregiver to her parents.

Thank you for this. I’m going to be 62 caring for my 84 year old mom with dementia who won’t even ask for water if her cup is full. I’m so tired, I just want to get up in the morning and it not be Groundhog Day !

I'm 60 also with a bad back. No one would believe the amount of physical labor I'm doing for my 6'4", 230 lb disabled dad .....people tell me to hire someone and I'm like, no agency is going to do this because technically he's a 2 person lift assist. 🤷♀️

At 61! I feel like everyday is a struggle just to be here for myself. Its so wrong that we have to care for our VERY senior parents. The one that made zero provision for this time in their life. The ones that are nasty and uncooperative and have nothing but expectations. Being a senior in the USA is not for the weak😢😢😢

My sister retired, partly to be more available to take care of mom's needs while I was recovering from two big knee surgeries. She went back to work to have a break.

No way you are 60! Well, makes sense… I’m the youngest in my family BUT the only girl. So I automatically became the caregiver. If it’s taking a toll on me… I don’t know how you look so good.

My partner is in dementia. Fortunately the finances will permit him to enter a nice care facility. He's a big guy. I have osteoporosis. I will respect my own health needs ehen the time comes.
