In the states we often check dead possums for babies for the same reason, if mom gets clipped often the babies will be ok if you get them to a wildlife rehab in time. Other mamas will also adopt loose orphans if they find them, but it never hurts to take a peak at the pouch for movement. They're north America's only marsupials, and an important part of the ecosystems here 💔

If you do this and you happen to have a can of spray paint with you don’t forget to mark a cross on the mother’s body. This is the sign to show everyone that you’ve checked the pouch for a joey.

if in doubt, try to take the whole roo if small enough, or gross as it sounds, cut the pouch off the roo safely. If joey is fused to the teat, you will severely disable the baby by ripping it off the teat
