@mathandcobb: Have you heard of Seth Braver and the Braver New Math? And his books?? Please let me know if you know this professor or have used his books to learn Calculus! #math #mathtok #calculus #infinitesimal l#TikTokCreatorSearchInsightsIncentive
people sitting around thinking of ways to make calc more difficult 😫🤬

I studied under Professor Braver at SPSCC! Genuinely my favorite math prof, I did his whole calc series and independently studied linear algebra using DALA. I really can't speak highly enough of the guy and his pedagogy, his teaching worked REALLY well for me.
If you're interested in his teaching style, most of his lectures are available on his YouTube channel "Braver New Math".

Seth Braver has also a book entitled "Lobachevski illuminated". It's about non-Euclidean geometry and Lobachevski's work.

Apart from Robinson’s non-standard analysis approach to infinitesimals, it’s interesting that until the mid 1930s, a sizable % of calc textbooks still included infinitesimals as objects with limit = 0. Math professors and students all seemed to get along fine using infinitesimals.

Speaking of alternative approaches, are you familiar with Visual Calculus developed by Mamikon? The book New Horizons in Geometry was written with Apostol and it goes in depth about this approach. The book is also one of the most beautiful math books due to the illustrations.
You can even use Lill's method to do some calculus ( derivatives). I mention Lill's method because it's also visual.

non-standard calculus can lead to proofs that feel more intuitive for some, but needing to introduce a whole new number system to do it is definitely a steep cost

I took Calc 2, 3, and multivariable Calc with Seth Braver. Incredible professor. I enjoyed his courses a lot and he wrote me a letter of recommendation for grad school.

Elementary Calculus: An Infinitesimal Approach was the book I read to self teach myself Calculus. Ill always have a special place in my heart for nonstandard anylisis.

sounds like calculus meant for physics. will be getting a copy sometime soon. infinitesimal thinking is so much of how we like to think

my calc 101 prof was obsessed with hyper-reals. he still taught limits of course, but he was always dropping his infinitesimal lore lol

oh this looks interesting. I've been meaning to finally go back over the basics again and this looks like a way to keep it fresh too.

I actually seem to remember finding the hyperreals conceptually easier than limits, but it’s been a loooong time since I was in school really thinking about it.

never read any math on Wikipedia. as a graduate level math student, it's literally never helped me once
