@dwnews: Germany’s Bundeswehr fights for recruits   The German armed forces are courting young people with so-called “discovery days.” This is because they urgently need new employees, as the war in Ukraine has increased the threat of war.  So far, the country has no conscription, but starting next year, everyone born in 2008 will get a questionnaire about their willingness to serve. I just hope that Germany has a very strong program in their military that teaches ethics, stresses defense as a core, and dissuades any sort of nationalism. Not because of Germany’s history, but because as a US citizen I can tell you, militaries have a tendency to engender a heavy nationalist attitude among recruits.

Germany learned nothing... Germany only has 100k soldiers and they just introduced compulsory joining in 2026. they are massive protests by young people in Germany who don't want to join the army. Russia has about 2 million soldiers... with about 10 million young people who were compulsory into training into the army in the past 10 years. Compulsory service is a long Russian tradition of about 200 years, it's what saved them during WW2,they can form armies pretty quickly cuz they soldiers need less training.
