Basil al-Assad: The Horseman Who Was Meant to Lead Syria Basil al-Assad the son of President Hafez al-Assad was one of the most well known figures in Syria during the late 1980s and early 1990s. He wasn’t known only because he was the president’s son but also because of his passion for horse riding and his military career. He became known as the Golden Knight and was especially famous for his love of horseback riding and show jumping. From a young age Basil had a strong passion for horses. Over time he became a skilled rider and started taking part in competitions. He even won a gold medal at the 1987 Mediterranean Games. Seeing him on horseback became one of the images people associated with him. He had the image of a young military man and athlete with a strong presence and confidence. But Basil wasn’t just a horseman. He studied engineering and military sciences and later served in the Syrian army. He also became involved in the presidential security system and gradually started appearing more often in political and military events alongside his father. By the early 1990s Basil was widely seen as the man being prepared to succeed his father. There was never an official announcement saying that he would definitely become president but his growing political and military role made it clear that he was being prepared for a major future role. He was young confident athletic and had a strong public image which made many people see him as Syria’s future leader. But that future came to an end suddenly on January 21 1994. Basil was on his way to Damascus International Airport when he was killed in a car accident. He was only around 31 years old. His death shocked Syria and marked a major turning point. The man who had been seen as Hafez al-Assad’s future successor was suddenly gone. After his death his younger brother Bashar was brought back into the political scene. Years later after Hafez al-Assad died in 2000 Bashar became president of Syria. Basil al-Assad remains remembered by many Syrians as a young man who brought together horse riding military service ambition and a strong personality. Whatever someone’s political opinion of the Assad family may be his story remains one of the most striking stories in modern Syrian history.
