@tilscience: Today I Learned that before fridges, people put live FROGS in their milk. For centuries, Russian and Finnish communities dropped brown frogs (Rana temporaria) into milk vessels to keep them fresh longer. It worked, they just didn’t know why. Fast forward to 2012: Scientists at Moscow State University discovered the frog’s skin secretes a cocktail of antimicrobial peptides (like Brevinin 1Tb) that fight off bacteria like Staphylococcus and Salmonella. Nature’s preservative. Now researchers are exploring whether frog skin compounds could be used to develop new antibiotics. As a biologist, I’ve often wondered how people initially thought of stuff like this before understanding the microbial world. Did they just start dropping random things in the milk or did a frog just happen to accidentally get in the milk?

I think we are giving humans too much credit, clearly it was the frogs original idea and we humans just noticed that the milk that the frog got into lasted longer 😆

Does the frog stay there? Does it die inside? Or is it taken out quickly? I have so many questions 😂

My sister is an organic chemist at RIT on a team studying the “total synthesis of Trocheliophorolide A.” Which is fancy science speak for: making antibiotics out of natural material made by soft coral reefs.

animals are people too :
Animals are sentient beings who can feel pain, fear, joy, stress the same way we do, even if they do not speak in human words. It's wrong to exploit them and what they produce for food when there's a huge variety of plant based foods for protein and health
