I view tags as spoiler free spoiler. Yea it’s gonna give me an idea of what’s gonna happen, but I don’t know the details. The dove maybe dead but idk what kind of dove it is.

I think the thing a lot of newer ao3 users completely miss is that it's an archive and as a result there is not and will never be an algorithm. and misuse of tags can, a lot of the time, stem from that. especially for younger folks who've had social media their entire lives, they are used to thinking tags are there to gain/boost attention, not to accurately identify the fic. I didn't know how often I've explained to newbies the lack of algorithm and they're just dumbfounded because that's not how the world exists for them

1000%, I usually skip reading the tags but I also use the hell out of the filtering system. Like, I hate hurt no comfort fics. What do I do? Filter those out and mentally thank the authors for tagging that!

It has been a long time since I engaged in fanfic space, but I say this all the time in the publishing space. People constantly want to use popular keywords to promote their books, even if it doesn't fit. All it does is hurt the author and the work, because people expecting certain things (like are described in tags) will be disappointed when it isn't there. Or the flip side, something that is there but wasn't advertised. It just tanks reviews and keeps the right readers away.

The tag system is the top three reasons ao3 is the best. You explained it really well. I read and post stories and have learned to (avoid spoilers) read the first few tags and ignore the rest to be surprised. If I have an issue, I use the excluded option to bypass fics outside of my comfort.

I don’t like spoiling in tags BUT if I have something triggering (that isn’t a major/required tag) I’ll include vague topic tags and then at the end of the fic (with a note in the top A/N that it’s there) go through and break down exactly what happens. I feel like that’s a nice middle ground

Also, if you’re a person who doesn’t care about seeing warnings and views tags as spoilers, there’s a setting on ao3 that lets you hide archive warnings and tags! All you have to do is click a box. Ao3 is great because it’s so customizable and it’s so easy to curate your own experience exactly the way you want it to be.

i once read a fic that tagged every pairing possible and when asked the author said it’s because they wanted to decide later what ship was endgame 😭 i’m sorry but i started reading for one ship in particular and it was halfway through and it was clearly going in another’s ship direction, just tag that ship!

As someone who didn’t start writing on AO3, I lurked for months while waiting for my invite link before even thinking about writing there. I still get a second opinion on my tags before posting to make sure I didn’t mess anything up.

Tags, to me, are a more detailed version of the genre sorting of traditional published books. Sure there's some level of "spoilers" there, but they don't take away from the experience of reading the fic
