@theladylikelawyer: I’ve spent 3 decades in the courtroom watching good people break their backs to pay off bad debt. The biggest lie you’ve been told? That you have to suffer forever to be "honorable." After 30 years, I’m here to tell you: the system is a math problem, not a moral one. Swipe through for the truths that will actually help you move forward. ➡️ Which slide surprised you the most? Let’s talk in the comments. I am a bankruptcy lawyer and I help people navigate debt relief with dignity #bankruptcy #debtrelief #financialfreedom #debtfreejourney #moneytips

I'd file in a second if student loans could be discharged

Best thing I ever did was file. 18-25 year old me had no concept of financial literacy and gladly accepted capital one’s limit increases on her credit card. Never again. 😭

I feel like people misunderstand me when I’m talking about 401k loans vs cashing them out. You can borrow from your 401k and I’d does nothing if you pay it back. If you cash it out you lose 40% off the top to taxes. 401k loans are great because you pay yourself back with interest

#8 hits hard, especially now with how corporations are always bailed out but people are left to rot.

Been there when I was married, during the 08 recession. We ended up walking away from our house after the Ch 13, didn’t even put it in the filing, or our car, just let the bank take it back. Our attorney told us to. Rented a house. I’m now divorced and I own my own home and my Fico is 840, my vehicle will be paid off in 6 months. I never pay interest on my credit cards. You can rebuild.

Considering it. Only for credit cards. They kept us afloat during my wife's cancer battle as I became unemployed at the same time. Advice?

I’m a renter. I’m afraid we wont be able to leave our current (already too small) apartment if we file.

I filed chapter 13 in Ga in May, approved by the courts in Oct. during that time, my credit score jumped up nearly 50 points, and already getting credit offers.. though, I know I am blocked from credit for a bit. Yes my pay check garnishment hurts, BUT my home and vehicles are safe.

Taking from your 401k isn’t that bad if you have 30 more years to keep stacking on it

I filed chapter 7 myself in June. we kept our house and two cash cars. We also filed an adversary proceeding and just got our student loans wiped too. Best decision we ever made. Our scores are back in the 660s

#5 thats why you dont pay medical debt. Eventually they make an offer for less. Ignore it. They will continue to lower the debt until it’s practically nothing and you can afford to pay it. Also, your credit score only matters if you plan on buying a car or house so dont stress about it otherwise. It can be fixed in a year.

Bankruptcy was the smartest thing I did. I kept accepting the credit increases and maxing them out in college to get by and the debt just became insurmountable. I discharged more than a years worth of earning potential in consumer debt without having to lose my car.
