It’s hypocritical to see many Somalis deflecting blame with excuses like, “He’s not Somali,” or “Everyone does it.” Since when do Muslims compare themselves to non-Muslims? Muslims are meant to be role models, not justifiers of sin. The Quran says, “You are the best of people brought forth for the guidance of mankind” (3:110). Yet many Somali Muslims prioritize culture over faith. Spreading memes about lying, stealing, or claiming that Minnesota was promised to them is sinful, not “trolling.” Many Somalis focus on culture over Islam, which confuses outsiders and even some Somalis themselves. Islam must come first, not nationality. We represent Islam, not just our community or culture. If we’re not holding ourselves accountable, how can we claim to be the “best of people,” as Allah mentions in the Quran? Real change starts with us, the Muslims. No more excuses. Step up and live by the moral standard that Islam demands.
