Please don’t say “Pentecostal” movement! You’re referring to the apostolic movement, very different that traditional Pentecostalism such as Assemblies of God.

You’re basically seeing this lie preached in UPC/Oneness Pentecostalism circles. I’ve been in Spirit-filled churches basically all my life and never heard that taught. The closest is “you’re missing out on a free gift from God… why would you not want it?”-type teaching.

Girl tell it. My father took my mom to a Pentecostal church when they were married and my mom said they literally forced her to try and speak in tongues

The problem he corrects is selfishness in public worship. The “2 or 3” rule applies only to public messages in tongues addressed to the church.

My understanding is that there is speaking in tongues to edify the church that requires someone to interpret because then understanding is needed. And speaking in tongues for personal prayer is different it’s just between you and God? Is something I’ve been trying to understand better. Everyone can speak in tongues in their prayer life, not everyone can speak in tongues to edify the church.

The problem is when you’re involved in religion this is what we fall into “control” “strict doctrine” etc. it’s about relationship not religion so maybe try getting away from what “religions” do and just focus on relationship. If you ask Holy Spirit for the gifting there is no saying you won’t receive it. Jesus tells to knock and he will answer, ask and you will receive, if this is a gifting from the Lord than surely every Christian can receive it.

yes! my daughter was between 8-10 going to church with my inlaws who are Pentecostal. They had my baby thinking because she couldn't speak in tongues she was going to hell.

It’s the belief of a certain denomination (assemblies of God) I grew up in it. But the Bible says the Holy Spirit gives its gifts to each person as he sees fit

I went to a bible collage and this was part of my spiritual trauma. They would basically force us to speak in tongues. To this day I struggle to hear others speak it without cringing.

I thought tongues was a way to bring non believers to Christ? It had no benefit to the church itself as in Corinth, but a personal gain, and it was done kind of as an undoing of the Tower of Babel?

I love family worship center in Louisiana bc they’re Pentecostal and do baptizing in the Holy Spirit and you just FEEL his presence. They don’t say you have to speak in tongues though, and this was my 1st ever church so I thought ALL Pentecostals were like that… found out quickly in Houston no lol

Preach!!! I grew up Pentecostal and the last church I went to had that view. Also pastor came over to my house in the midst of tragedy when I was diagnosed with cancer and told me I needed to do it. Flat out told me him no.
