@thedancelens: Paris Opera Directors Part 4: Rudolf Nureyev Rudolf Nureyev (1938–1993) was one of the most influential ballet dancers and choreographers of the twentieth century. Born aboard the Trans-Siberian Railway near Lake Baikal and raised in Oufa, Bashkiria, he (eventually) trained at the Vaganova School in Leningrad and became a soloist with the Kirov Ballet. In 1961, while on tour in Paris, he sought political asylum, an event that transformed his career and international stature. Nureyev danced with leading companies worldwide, including The Royal Ballet, and later served as director of the Paris Opera Ballet from 1983 to 1989. He is renowned for restoring prominence to the male dancer in classical ballet through his reinterpretations of works by Marius Petipa, as well as for creating contemporary ballets. His legacy endures through his performances, choreography, and lasting impact on ballet’s artistic and institutional life. #ballet ##nutcrackerseason #ballerina

I saw him in Toronto when I was 9. My Mum took me to the stage door after the performance. He walked directly to his limo and got in. They started to pull away but he stopped the car rolled down his window and signed my program. Then rolled up his window and drove away. I’ll never forget that. I’m 59 and still have his autograph. He was an incredible artist.

The wildest thing to me about both Nureyev and Baryshnikov being Pushkin's student is that both lived with him and his wife in their one room apartment, sleeping on a cot at the foot of their bed. Years apart this happened.

Imagine being Pushkin, who taught probably the two most famous male dancers ever... As a teacher yourself, I know how you must appreciate that, Cynthia.
