Born aboard the Trans-Siberian Railway near Lake Baikal and raised in Oufa, Bashkiria, he (eventually) trained at the Vaganova School in Leningrad and became a soloist with the Kirov Ballet. In 1961, while on tour in Paris, he sought political asylum, an event that transformed his career and international stature. Nureyev danced with leading companies worldwide, including The Royal Ballet, and later served as director of the Paris Opera Ballet from 1983 to 1989. He is renowned for restoring prominence to the male dancer in classical ballet through his reinterpretations of works by Marius Petipa, as well as for creating contemporary ballets.
