The 80s was defined by the white, beige and black style of Cassette Futurism. It was a futuristic look, but restrained by the existing technology at the time. It originated in the 70s, but was everywhere in the 80s, and lasted into the 90s. Its angular plastic shapes with hard edges and a utilitarian style, where machines and buttons often only have one function. It’s a sci-fi aesthetic but also a real world office reality of the time. Sound equipment, stereos, synthesizers and keytar share the same look, and also cars were influenced by the aesthetic. They hold inspiration from Bauhaus era with designs by the likes of Wendell Sander and Dieter Rams influencing the style. The computers were originally made to blend into offices. And in some European countries, there were laws saying computing equipment had to be light value colors, which may help explain why the white/beige stuck. Amongst the futurism trends, it comes after the atomic age and space age and lasted up until the y2k futurism where silver dominated. It’s reminiscent of a time when microchips were just invented and technology merged with the industrial era of before to create a tactile experience. #cassettefuturism #80s #80snostalgia #aesthetics #nostalgia
