People use "innovation" as a buzzword; not all innovation is good innovation, and innovation under capitalism brings out the worst - innovation that rather belongs in a cyberpunkesque dystopia. Capitalism driving innovation is a tired myth, I would actually argue innovation is tied to information networks (how easy information is shared), rather than any specific social system.

Why didn’t any communist or socialist countries do this? If you want evidence of innovation and creativity, just look at consumer markets. Socialist and communist systems have historically produced very limited consumer choice, while capitalist economies generate vast, competitive, and constantly evolving consumer markets. That contrast alone says a lot about which system actually incentivises innovation.
