What are your thoughts on where Dragonriders of Pern lies on this scale? Because I feel it goes fantasy with sci-fi elements if you read in publication order, but sci-fi with fantasy elements if you read in chronological. I would definitely say that Ane McCaffrey's other works like Acorna and the Twins or Petaybee are sci-fi with fantasy.

Got into an argument with someone about Dragon Riders of Pern. They insisted it was strict fantasy just because it had dragons and telepathic connections. They did not like my soapbox speech about lost tech because their ancestors came over on spaceships 😤

My understanding of high vs. low fantasy is whether or not the setting has any connection to our world. Song of Ice and Fire is high fantasy because its world is unconnected to ours, while Sword of Shannara is low fantasy because its world is our world after a cataclysm.

best definition to define the two I've heard: if there is a scientific explanation for stuff (even inaccurate or bad science) it's sci fi. if the explanation for anything is "magic" it's fantasy.

I feel like Arthur C Clarke's quote "any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic" fits a lot of fantasy books. I don't really worry about it. I enjoy both genres.

Nah. Fantacy is about adventure. Sci-fi is about exploring today's moral/political issues in a different context. The rest is just a vaneer.

I get the impression that Eastern fiction is more accepting of sci-fi elements in fantasy stories. There are lots of examples of very clear fantasy settings where some kind of advanced technology pops up, often from an ancient civilization.
