No, there’s no better way to ask the question than to just ask the question. That’s the problem with expecting everything to be passive-aggressive or sugarcoated. Nobody has time to waste. They’re asking because they want to check your temperature. Are they being fetishized? Are they being treated like a token? Are you actually interested in them, or are you more interested in the idea of having Black children or some other fantasy associated with Black men? Those are fair questions to ask. You should be able to ask directly, get an honest answer, and decide whether you’re comfortable with it. There’s nothing wrong with checking the temperature.
