@aero.virals: The concept of spinning aircraft tires before they touch down is aimed at lessening the severe mechanical and thermal stress they endure on contact with the runway. Normally, when a plane lands, its tires go from being completely still to spinning rapidly almost instantly. This sudden change creates intense friction due to the initial slip between the tires and the runway. That slip causes major surface wear, heat spikes that can exceed 200°C, and localized damage to the rubber, leading to flat spots and faster tire degradation. If the tires were already rotating at a speed matching the aircraft’s ground speed, this slip could be greatly reduced or eliminated, minimizing both friction and heat buildup where the tire meets the runway. Simulations and theoretical studies, such as thermal-mechanical finite element models, support the idea that pre-rotating tires can reduce wear and thermal stress. Still, putting this into practice involves significant engineering hurdles. Spinning up large aircraft tires to landing speed in a short time would need high-torque electric or pneumatic systems, which add weight and complexity to landing gear systems already designed for strength and reliability. Also, the cost-benefit analysis doesn’t currently support using these systems, particularly in commercial aviation where replacing tires is routine and relatively cheap compared to installing and maintaining a pre-spin system. Some experimental setups have been tested by organizations like NASA, but none have proven scalable or efficient enough for regular use. So, while the idea of pre-spinning aircraft tires clearly offers mechanical advantages, real-world constraints make it an impractical solution for most commercial aircraft today. #aviation #pilotlife #avgeek #airplane #flightdeck #cockpitview #airbus #boeing #planespotting #runwaylife #flighttraining #jetlife #airportlife #instaaviation #flyinghigh video source IG: @deeps_physics

Spinning wheels are gyros and would interfere with landing control. If you were coming in at an angle because of wind it would be extremely difficult to correct yaw before tire contact with the ground

Also, spinning wheels on final is drag we could do without.
