Still, putting this into practice involves significant engineering hurdles. Spinning up large aircraft tires to landing speed in a short time would need high-torque electric or pneumatic systems, which add weight and complexity to landing gear systems already designed for strength and reliability. Also, the cost-benefit analysis doesn’t currently support using these systems, particularly in commercial aviation where replacing tires is routine and relatively cheap compared to installing and maintaining a pre-spin system.
