In 1968, a production unit registered in Rome under the name Stella Lontana Film — no prior credits, financed by a private aerospace engineering firm whose corporate filing lists no contracts and no clients — completed 24 minutes of Eastmancolor footage across eleven nights on a soundstage outside the city, using models and matte work the effects supervisor’s notes describe as “beyond anything our budget should have permitted.” The financing came through in a single wire transfer with no itemization. The producer credited on the surviving call sheet has no other work in any Italian film registry before or after 1968. The pilot had no dialogue for the first nine minutes. A ship crossing a star field shot in a single unbroken take that the camera operator’s log states was achieved “without a motion control rig, which none of us had access to, and which did not exist commercially for another decade.” The desert sequence was filmed on location in Tunisia. The costume department’s notes record a robed figure whose design brief specified only “should look retrieved, not designed.” It aired once on a regional channel in Lazio, March 3rd 1968. Runtime: 24 minutes. The broadcast was listed in the station log as a technical test. No title. No production credit. A viewer wrote to the station describing a battle in space filmed with a clarity and scale that, in his words, “did not belong to 1968, or perhaps to any year I have lived in.” Stella Lontana Film dissolved in June 1968.
