I think bean soup theory stems from the bigger problem of a lack of media literacy, particularly in younger generations who are used to information being spoonfed to them on a for YOU page. So they expect everything that comes across the FYP to actually be for them, instead of being able to look at it and go “oh this isn’t for me but it is for someone else” and scroll.

Sometimes I wonder if the bean soup theory is because people expect their FYP etc to be so tailored to them and their taste that they expect everything they see to be specifically for them and their opinions

Someone accused me of a brow and mini face lift in a skincare video. I wish! I think people are just very isolated, angry, and lonely. They will start an argument just to have a dialogue with someone. 🖤

Being in my 60’s and spending the majority of my life without social media, I think it is the anonymity of the internet that allows people to behave in ways they never would face to face. Social media can give you a false sense of power by allowing you to make whatever comments you want without much accountability . It goes without saying that you are someone to be admired living your life on your terms, driving a successful company and opening your life to others. I think your wonderful and most of the noise you see in the negative space is due to those individuals dissatisfaction with their own lives. Just keep being wonderful you!

I’ve been in marketing and social media professionally for about 20 years and my take is that the people who feel the most powerless offline reach for a sense of power online, thanks to the perception that digital space still isn’t “real” (real people, consequences, etc). They get the boost of feeling powerful for a moment—either as the “gotcha” brigade or as bullies—but without having to answer to anyone face to face. The accountability does show up of course, but screens do a very strange thing to people’s sense of human interaction. It’s wild.

I think adults are so disconnected & lonely that we act like toddlers. “Acting out” gets us any sort of connection from another person and we’ve formed bad habits to get it 🫠 We don’t know how to get to each other via kindness anymore.

People that act like that online need to get acquainted with the touch grass theory. I think it comes from a lack of real life relationships.

I’ve noticed this dichotomy of people either being socially clueless, cue the bean soup theory, but then with ai and how easy it’s to get information I feel like people are becoming know it alls and are not interested to have a conversation or actually not having an opinion, because ai will comfort them that their questions are insightful, they have unique perspective… so there is this lose of self reflection and we have people people being overly confident in their cluelessness

My understanding is that it has to do with people wanting/expecting content to apply or cater to them, even though it’s not intended for them. I think it is made worse by (or originates from) the algorithms themselves existing to customize content to the individual viewer…. Add in passive aggressive and insecure people who get some kind of satisfaction out of criticizing others…. Anything to hijack attention. 😒Meanwhile… love your content ❣️

i’ve had to remove myself from so many online spaces because of ‘what if?, can i? etc’ because it’s exhausting there seems to be so many people who lack self awareness and don’t understand social and media literacy.

I think life can leave a lot of people feeling insignificant and they will do anything to feel seen. Online negative interactions get a more reliable response.
