Halime Sultan was of Abkhazian descent.She entered the imperial harem in the late 16th century and became a favorite (haseki) of Sultan Mehmed III while he was still a prince (sanjak-bey) in Manisa.She was the mother of Sultan Mustafa I and likely of Şehzade Mahmud (the eldest son of Mehmed III,who was executed in 1603).She also had at least two daughters.Halime Sultan’s life was marked by tragedy and political intrigue.In 1603, her eldest son, Mahmud, was a popular prince.However, Halime sent a message to a religious seer asking if her son would become the next Sultan.The message was intercepted by Safi̇ye Sultan (the Valide Sultan).Sultan Mehmed III, fearing a coup,executed Mahmud.Halime was spared but fell out of favor and was sent to the Old Palace (Eski Saray).When Mehmed III died in 1603,his son Ahmed I (son of Handan Sultan) took the throne.Crucially, Ahmed I did not execute his brother, Mustafa (Halime’s son),breaking the Ottoman "Law of Fratricide."Mustafa was kept in the "Cage" (Kafes),which severely affected his mental health.During Ahmed I’s 14-year reign,Halime remained in the Old Palace,receiving a modest stipend but keeping a close eye on the political climate.Halime Sultan holds a unique place in history as she served as Valide Sultan twice for the same son.After Ahmed I died, his brother Mustafa I was enthroned,the first time a brother succeeded a brother instead of a son.Halime became Valide Sultan.However,Mustafa’s mental instability was evident,he often threw gold coins into the sea and wandered the palace.After only three months,he was deposed in favor of his nephew,Osman II.In 1622,the Janissaries revolted against Sultan Osman II.Halime Sultan and her son-in-law, Kara Davud Pasha,were instrumental in the rebellion.Osman II was deposed and brutally murdered at Yedikule Fortress. Mustafa I was re-enthroned.During this year,Halime held near-absolute power,though the empire was in chaos due to the illegitimacy of the regicide.In 1623,the Janissaries and the clergy realized Mustafa I could not rule.Halime agreed to her son’s deposition on the condition that his life be spared.Then,Murad IV (son of Kösem Sultan) took the throne.
