The consequences of his actions: He has burned almost all of his bridges, he is broke, can’t compete in the tournament to fulfill his dream, probably wanted for multiple crimes, and now has a kid (although he does eventually come around to the kid thing)

He literally won an exhibition match that took place during a PR event. He wasn’t able to play in the tournament in Japan. Had to go back home flying in the back with soldiers and had to return home to a kid. He had literally no success when it came to ping-pong.

I’m not saying this is correct, but one way to look at it is more a cautionary tale of values rather than actions. I think it’s obvious that the things he is doing are wrong. Him avoiding consequences isn’t to say that those things he did are okay, it’s to shift the focus onto his self-deprecating behaviors and ego. He has everything going right for him. There are people who believe in him and people who love him. He lucks out over and over again, avoiding responsibility, but he still cannot get his priorities straight and refuses to humble himself. Seeing him avoid consequences over and over again shows that the caution isn’t about jail or punishment, it’s about ego and purpose. Opposite the honey story, Marty isn’t one to humiliate himself to help others, but he is willing to humiliate himself for his own goals. it isn’t until the very end that he looks outside himself and realizes what he has around him. This isn’t about the consequences of crime or hustling people, it’s about the consequences of ego.

i think him not being able to make the tournament and not becoming a famous and successful tennis player was the consequence. that’s what he was training for his entire life. however, he took what he could get and he was content with just beating endo

I think a lot of people are missing the consequences because they aren’t shown at the very end like many would expect, the consequences are the sacrifices that marty made and the embarrassment he endured just to not even accomplish his initial goal. After realizing this, he was content in proving to HIMSELF that he is the best, not to the world like he initially wanted.

I think realistically in the future it’s bound to happen. He had no real growth, so over time we can make the assumption his actions will catch up to him in some form

i would call it more of a character spiraling than a cautionary tale. he starts out with this enormous ego and piece by piece, it gets broken down as he becomes more and more desperate (i.e. agreeing to do things that he would’ve never done in the beginning). his quest for glory is ultimately pointless, causing him to realize that the only gratification he’s going to get at this point in his life is internal rather than external. looking for him to get this big “punishment” is missing the point of how his psyche gets destroyed over time.

It’s basic film writing, we follow Marty threw the movie and know his goals and what he wants, yeah the end scene makes it seem like he got everything he could want, but using the context of the movie and his character we know this isn’t what he wants or was working towards, he won’t be happy. He won’t be satisfied with his achievements this movie, and with his family, the baby is responsibility staring at him, a narcissistic character that only cares about himself, that wants to be the greatest ping pong player of all time now has to settle, after embarrassing himself in Japan, and probably owing people a lot of money. That’s not a win
