I called and said “I have six positive pregnancy tests in front of me” and the girl goes “well what are you needing to be seen for?” and I was like “I guess to see the doctor?? I’ve never been pregnant before” and she goes “you just start prenatal care” like OK AND WHAT IS THAT

This is why you places like planned parenthood and pregnancy centers are so great. They will test you, are often hooked in with ultrasound or partner with a place so you can get your first ultrasound for free, and they give proof of pregnancy so you can get insurance or Medicaid and then see an actual ob.

These comments huurrrtt. I’m an OBGYN appointment scheduler and I can’t imagine treating patients like this. Generally, for my practice, I ask the first day of their last menstrual period. That is what we have to go off of. From there, we do a confirmation of pregnancy appointment between 6-8 weeks from that date. If a patient has irregular periods, or does not know their LMP date, I schedule first available. At the confirmation appointment, we do a UA, bloodwork, and they meet with the provider to answer any questions the patient may have. From there we schedule the first ultrasound between 8-12 weeks. Usually closer to the 8-10 wk mark though. The bloodwork can also give us an indication of how far along a patient is as well. Ugh. I wish so many people didn’t have bad experiences. I’m so sorry that was your first impression!

I didn’t get to see a doctor until I was nearly 20 weeks and that’s “too far along” for some doctors but NOBODY was willing to see me and made it so difficult 😭😭

As an OBGYN CMA my office doesn’t usually do ultrasounds before 8 weeks UNLESS mom’s period is irregular … you genuinely cannot see much on an ultrasound before 8 weeks, but not everyone knows that! So sorry you had that experience. Also, even if cycle is regular we do pregnancy confirmation visits with bloodwork & whatnot

It’s also wild to me that so many of the “dangers” of pregnancy are during the first trimester and the doctor doesn’t see you until almost the second trimester. I understand they can’t get a good image or heartbeat until a certain point, but I feel like they could at least do the “Here’s what you need to know about pregnancy and taking care of yourself” spiel right away

I called our hospital I wanted to deliver at, the lady was like omg how exciting congrats! got all my info to start my account, sent me to the right office, and they were SO nice helping me. I hate that not everyone gets that!!

This happened to me i was 18. After the first call i started saying “I got a positive test a few weeks ago”. That helped, but it’s annoying I had to lie 😒

(Never been pregnant) But I have always been baffled by the pushback from trying to get ANY female health care tests and screenings that they don’t deem necessary or urgent. It’s like… IM LITERALLY TRYING TO PAY YOU MONEY AND USE MY INSURANCE PLAN STOP FIGHTING ME DO YOU NOT WANT MONEY??

I’m an OBGYN receptionist and I always tell the girlies what to expect at their first visit. also ask if they need any prenatals or have any questions because I hear experiences like this so often 🥺 womens healthcare should be helpful
