The Battle of al-Walaja (633 CE) was fought between the Muslim Arab army led by Khalid ibn al-Walid and a combined Sasanian Persian and Roman-aligned coalition. According to traditional historical accounts, the coalition force numbered around 150,000 soldiers, composed of Persian regular infantry and cavalry, reinforced by Roman-aligned and Christian Arab units. These empires represented over 2,000 years of combined imperial military experience and were among the most technologically advanced powers of their time. Khalid commanded a much smaller force of approximately 15,000 Muslim soldiers, which he divided into three maneuver units of about 5,000 men each. One unit was positioned upstream along the Euphrates, another downstream, while the central unit faced the river crossing. As large Persian and Roman units crossed the river via a bridge and a ford, Khalid waited until a significant portion—traditionally said to be around 50,000 troops—had committed to the crossing. He then ordered the flanking units to attack along the riverbanks, cutting off the forward Persian–Roman formations from their rear forces. The central Muslim unit engaged in repeated advances and controlled withdrawals, steadily compressing the enemy formations. Unable to maneuver and trapped between the river and attacking units, the Persian and Roman forces collapsed. Despite overwhelming numerical superiority, the coalition suffered catastrophic losses, while Muslim casualties were comparatively low.
