I was home alone one night when I decided to take a shower. Nothing unusual. I locked the bathroom door, turned on the water, and stepped in. About five minutes later, I heard something. Knock. I froze. Someone had knocked on the bathroom door. I turned off the water. “Hello?” Nothing. I slowly opened the shower curtain. Nobody was there. ⸻ I turned the water back on. Another message from my mom: “Don’t come downstairs.” I typed: “Why?” She replied: “Because I’m watching the security camera.” Then: “Someone is standing outside your bathroom.” ⸻ I looked at the door. The handle slowly moved down. I backed away. Then my phone buzzed again. My mom: “Wait.” Another message: “I can see the person now.” Then: “It’s you.” I stared at the message. A year of DMI progress. It’s not easy watching your baby cry through an exercise or wondering if all of this work is actually going to lead somewhere. But looking back over this past year, every bit of it has been worth it. Is Benji independently walking? No. But I’ve watched him intentionally move his legs to take steps. I’ve watched him move his gait trainer on his own for the first time. He’s starting to pull himself forward with his arms during army crawling. We’ve watched him figure out that he can use his own body to create movement. And that is huge for a child who has always depended on someone else to move his body for him. He’s also started responding to cues and intentionally trying to do what we ask of him. That’s one of the things I love about DMI. It takes these huge milestones like sitting, crawling, standing and walking and breaks them down into tiny pieces. Every exercise has a purpose. Now that Benji has moved on to more advanced exercises, it’s been really cool to look back and see how all of those smaller exercises played a role in getting him here. Things that seemed so little at the time were actually building the foundation for what he’s doing now. Progress doesn’t always mean reaching the big milestone. Sometimes it’s one intentional step. One arm pulling forward. Moving a gait trainer for the first time. Responding to a cue. Realizing that moving your body a certain way can actually get you somewhere. #cerebralpalsy #hie #microcephaly
