It’s as if phonics and SoR doesn’t work for all students 🤷♂️

Then teacher need to stop passing children who don’t meet grade standards. My younger sister passed 1st grade not knowing how to read basically anything, she switched schools and her 2nd grade teacher had to tell my mom “hey, your child should have failed”.

I'm so thankful my daughter's 1st grade teacher told me she was behind and that it was a big deal. We spent many of nights crying together over sight words and reading out loud! By the end of the year she was at level and since then shes been right where she should be for 5th grade. A few weeks ago she narrated the entire nativity play for our church in front of about 200 people, no problem!

YESSSSS!!!! I'm a kindergarten teacher and a certified reading specialist. The amount of time I spend stressing the importance of phonics development in the early grades is insane. I have so many families tell me that their kids don't need to learn these things now because they'll just learn it later. 🤦♀️

As an 8th grade teacher, my “normal” students cannot sound out words, spell, or problem solve when reading challenging texts. They are stuck at an elementary reading level and are so frustrated my challenge that they don’t want to do more. The gaps are so wide and it’s scary.

Yep. Nevada has a “Read by grade 3” law. My son is in reading intervention in 2nd grade. although I think he bombed the test on purpose cause he reads chapter books at home. But I figure the intervention won’t hurt.

I did Montessori as a kid. Memorized words. My spelling was atrocious as a child. Phonics is important.

Thank you for explaining. Parents need to intervene early 😌

We still had reading groups in 3rd grade. Of course that was 50 years ago when we didn’t feel the need to rush learning and teach lots of material instead of mastering the basics!

This isn’t true at my school. We identify struggling readers and they get intensive intervention from a reading specialist.

Mandy| Mama| Teacher :
At my school, students who are below grade level are in MTSS/RtI and are provided daily instruction for 30 minutes that is explicit to bridge gaps. However, they should habe started this intervention at the primary school in K-2 as soon as the gaps were evident.

Parents need to take responsibility for that. Maybe schools need to have parent education classes, but if your kid is not reading a grade level you need to be reading with them every day.

I have had so many high schoolers over the years who cannot read and they've just been pushed through year after year and the gap is so monstrously wide there's nothing that can be done in a traditional classroom

My son started reading in the first couple of months in 3rd grade. It literally was a light switch moment. And became a great reader. He had wonderful porosity and intonation.

So for those of your schools do this through 5th, many many middle schools do not have interventionists. Those kids do not get individualized help. Their teachers have 120 students. Unless your child has an IEP they do not get a resource class, and even if they do they are expected to do the work on level in their other classes.

I retained my 1st grader and demanded Wilson Reading through his IEP. I had to fight admin hard for the reasons why even though my learners entire IEP team agreed and supported me. We are now halfway through 1st grade 2.0 and absolutely flourishing. It was a very arduous decision but so glad I made it.
