I did an internship at a packaging company in the Netherlands and these tips also work outside of China. Companies just told us, we want a box and a whole vague story. Then we had customers that send in technical drawings of their product and asked to create a tight fitting packaging that could be thrown from 4m without damaging the product. The more precise the question the better the outcomes. I was in the design department and the second customer was happy after 1 revision while the first one needed 5 or more.
