My assistant and I were filming a video to promote a local coffee shop and just minding our own business. As we were walking away, this older man started muttering “you guys are so f*cking stupid” at my assistant. I was walking ahead and didn’t hear what he said, so when I came back, I casually asked what he was saying. He then repeated that we were idiots and what we were doing was so f*cking stupid (he had just watched us film in an empty parklet for 2 minutes with no one else around us or in our video). I calmly explained that we were supporting a small business, just like he was. His aggression toward us continued, so that’s when my assistant began filming because he was being verbally abusive. As soon as she started recording, this is where the video starts. I tried to de-escalate the situation, but the woman continued physically assaulting my assistant and then refused to give back her sunglasses. What upsets me most about this whole situation is that my assistant was just there doing her job and somehow ended up being verbally harassed and physically assaulted. She did absolutely nothing to deserve this treatment, and as someone who was responsible for having her there, I felt especially upset seeing this happen to her. I’m sharing this because I don’t think this kind of behavior should be brushed off or normalized. I hope this couple reflects on their actions and thinks twice before treating anyone else this way. And a huge thank you to all the bystanders who stepped in and stood up for us. We really appreciate you 🙏🏼
