I was in the car driving to San Francisco with my aunt when I was a teenager. She was catching me up on family drama and told me about a family that went to her church. She started saying that the wife was being over dramatic because the husband had “been inappropriate” with one of the kids. I guess the wife wanted to report it and get a divorce but all of the church members and the bishop convinced her to “keep it in the church” and do family counseling with the bishop. My aunt was on the bishops side and I sat there listening in disgust. I was about 15 and I didn’t spend a lot of time with my aunt, but I decided then that she was unsafe person that couldn’t be trusted. I still think about that family and those kids. I never asked anymore about them though

Sexual assault is way too common and underreported, and I agree we need accountability. But saying ‘most men are r*pists’ is a huge claim and it pushes people into defensive mode instead of changing behavior. I’d rather focus on what actually enables it—peer pressure, silence, coercion, and weak consequences.
