You might consider putting it in the freezer for 48 hours and then using the freeze dryer. It will reduce your FD time and save a bit of wear and tear on your machine.

were you able to freeze dry the entire gallon in one go or did you have to run the freeze dryer again to get the whole gallon freeze dried? I've been wanting to do this, but worried about how many times I'll have to run the freeze dryer to get an entire gallon done.

That's good to know. I am italian living in Italy, I mostly just see this from US getting used in private homes, I was wondering about expenses. It's for sure a cool and helpful machine which in a parallel universe I'd love to get! (i.e. If I could afford one😂)
