@ourgrimpast: Railway guns in World War II were extremely large artillery pieces mounted on railroad cars so they could be transported despite their massive size and weight. These weapons were mainly used for long-range bombardment where regular field artillery could not reach, such as attacking fortified positions, cities, coastal defenses, or troop concentrations far behind enemy lines. Germany was the most well-known user of railway guns in WWII. One of the most famous was the Schwerer Gustav, a gigantic 80 cm gun that weighed over 1,000 tons and required thousands of personnel to operate. It was used during the siege of Sevastopol to destroy heavy fortifications. Another iconic German railway gun was the Paris Gun’s descendant, the K5 series, including the gun nicknamed Leopold or Anzio Annie, which bombarded Allied forces in Italy.#History #foryou #railway #guns #artillery
