@lifewithmayu: How I spent New Year’s in Japan 🇯🇵🎍 A quiet, meaningful start to the year surrounded by tradition, food, and family. We welcomed the new year the Japanese way—enjoying Toshikoshi Soba on New Year’s Eve, a tradition symbolizing good fortune and longevity. Growing up, we ate it right at midnight, but now I prefer having it for dinner. Like every year, we watched Kōhaku Uta Gassen, Japan’s iconic New Year’s Eve music show. Honestly, New Year’s in Japan doesn’t feel complete without it. This year, Team White won 🤍. New Year’s Day started with Osechi Ryōri, beautifully packed in bento-style boxes, each dish representing health, happiness, and good luck. Even though osechi is more than enough, my mom always prepares extra dishes. And of course, mochi is a must for dessert. After eating, we headed to a nearby Shinto shrine for Hatsumōde, the first shrine visit of the year. While I’m personally Christian, I go to honor and respect the culture. I also drew an Omikuji fortune for ¥100 yen, just for fun and curiosity. This year, there was even a small matsuri festival at the shrine. We enjoyed dango (more mochi, of course), and Mychan couldn’t leave without getting the colorful cotton candy cups. They were so pricey, but part of the experience.
