Defensive goaltending was put in place across all leagues in 1944, when Wilt was 8 and 2 years before the BAA started (precursor to NBA) Offensive goaltending, though in part due to Wilt, was introduced bc most centers (most notoriously Bill Russell) did that . Funny enough the FT line rule didn't change in the NBA at the same time as the NCAA. In Wilt's 1st year ib college, Kansas' rival coach, legend and creator of the modern version of the triangle offense (not Phil), Tex Winter, saw Wilr dunking the ball from the FT line taking just a 3 step starting run while in practice, and in the 1956 NCAA convention rushed the board to change the rule. The NCAA made it a rule that player had to shoot from within the smicircle over the FT line. The thing is the NBA didn't change it, and funny enough the change wasn't bc of Wilt, but bc of a reporter that asked the Celtics if they were afraid of Wilt doing that in the POs in 1960. Red (and everyone else) though that had been banned, so he run to the league's commision and had them change the rule. Later Wilt said that both him and his coach thought that wasn't allowed in the NBA (that it was changed in 1956 at the same time as the NCAA did it) and that's why he never did it, but had they know it was still allowed they would have tried it several times.
