@dr.erin.phd: Replying to @Nini Anderson don’t listen to anyone who says English is a useless degree! #college #undergrad #salarytransparency #salary #englishmajor
I am also a technical writer with a humanities degree! TW is great but the industry is in decline. So many layoffs

This is reassuring. My daughter graduates soon with her degree in English. She has a minor in sociology. Her focus is technical writing and research.

Let’s also keep in perspective the race and gender component in this equation because there’s a bunch of women and poc who will never have a boss give them more than what they asked for usually if the job was paying 85 they’ll be offered 80k

I appreciate the transparency on realistic job hopping for lack of a better term combined with realistic context such as commutes and insurance

Yeah, so he's management. He not really using his degree as the basis of his experience, but his career trajectory and people skills. He could have had a degree in math or dance and done much the same thing. I'm sure English helped a bit in those first jobs.

Someone I am very close with has a BA in history, she makes 7 figures now. Liberal arts degrees are very valuable, you learn how to write, communicate, research, present, critical think.

I love your transparency. I study biology and I’m not premed anymore and I don’t want to go to grad school either so hearing these interesting paths gives me hope that’ll find a job with a seemingly useless degree

I had a long career in marketing as a program manager with a professional writing degree. Every employer commented on my BA positively! Strong communication skills are desirable and transferable across industries and roles. The degree isn’t enough though. I tell my students they need to pair it with strong internships to be competitive. The degree is only one (essential) piece of the puzzle.

As a writing major (with a technology and psychology and education background), I can corroborate that this is all possible - from the unimportance of grades to the salary ranges. Also, high-five to your husband and all the liberal and fine arts types following your content! 🙌

What does a program manager do? Is it still a program manager of the writers? My youngest just got a merit scholarship for a creative writing program and wants to get a minor in technical writing or in actual computer science so he can be a technical writer for tech or medical companies, but then write his novel on the side, you know what I mean. He still knows he has to eat.
