A reminder for drivers at our school crosswalks: PLEASE STOP AND STAY STOPPED. 🚸 In this video, you can see the vehicle beginning to encroach into the crosswalk while students and pedestrians are still crossing. I had my eyes on this vehicle throughout the crossing. As a crossing guard, my head is constantly on a swivel. I am watching the crosswalk, the vehicles immediately around me, and traffic approaching from both directions—including vehicles that may be coming from farther away or may not be obeying the school-zone rules. Utah law is very clear: under Utah Code § 41-6a-1002, a driver approaching a school crosswalk must come to a complete stop when the crosswalk is occupied by a person. Drivers also have a duty to yield to pedestrians in the crosswalk. Additionally, Utah Code § 41-6a-209 recognizes the authority of a uniformed adult school crossing guard to direct, control, and regulate traffic. Drivers are required to comply with the crossing guard’s lawful directions. Please don’t assume that because you’re stopped, you can start creeping forward. If children, parents, walkers, or other pedestrians are still in the crosswalk, stay stopped and wait for the crossing to be completely clear and for the crossing guard to release traffic. I know most people aren’t trying to create a dangerous situation. I also know that many drivers simply don’t realize how quickly a vehicle creeping forward can change the situation for a child who is still crossing. This isn’t about being difficult or holding up traffic. It’s about giving kids the safest possible crossing. I am watching for traffic in every direction because I have to assume that not every driver is going to follow the rules. One distracted, impatient, or unaware driver is all it takes for a normal school morning to turn into a tragedy. Please stop. Stay stopped. Watch for the crossing guard. Wait until the crosswalk is clear. Then proceed when directed.
