Coming from a Chinese passing Malay person, I 100% agree in seeing the shift of beauty standards in Malaysia with the explosion of K-entertainment. It’s definitely become way more narrow and more unforgiving for anyone outside of it. I’ve went from nobody talking about my skin colour to people telling me how “tan” I am like it’s a bad thing. Its wild!

As a Chinese Malaysian, it's so crazy to me that the ideal beauty standard for a Malaysian is not geared more towards tan to dark skinned women, with wavy hair, big eyes, because that's the majority of the female population here. But then again, im gonna contribute this to not just kpop but all the way back to colonisation > worshipping whiteness and by association, proximity to whiteness (which is where the Chinese locals are privy to only because we are fair and nothing else).

thisss. also the fact that even the cosmetic industry here is catered toward fairskinned people and we can never get darker shades of foundation/concealer in drug stores as if darkskinned people do not exist here

Maybe I’m ignorant but shouldn’t we be more confident with the way we look and not care about others opinion I.E the beauty standard? If you are comfortable and happy with your own appearance why should we pay attention to others opinions?

I totally get what you mean. I’m also in the same category, but as I get older I realized that I find women who are internally confident and really owning it are extremely attractive so I’ve just been embracing my personality and character and I’ve been told that I glowed up somehow. I love your look tho babe keep owning this! And thanks for talking about this!

i feel this sm. growing up, i was told im too dark. now older, tho i know im pretty (imo) im still not considered the “beauty standard”. as for hair, when i wear it naturally, im told “whats wrong w ur hair” but a girl w a perm & same exact hair and is east asian everyone is like “OMG SO PRETTY”

the fact that i'm coming across whitening products everyday is crazy, what's worse is influencers calling paid products "shade matches" when it's like ten shades lighter than their skin, the shade range is beyond disappointing coming from SEA brands..

Also on the subject of ‘omg what are you talking about you’re so pretty!’. I think it’s strange that as a society, we can’t just acknowledge this issue when it’s brought up without having to do this weird dance in the comment section. Being pretty or not doesn’t negate the issue being discussed here. We don’t have to assure someone that they’re pretty when they bring up systemic issues about the way our society views pretty privilege. As though if the person wasn’t pretty, their words would mean any less. The point is, we are trying to not put the focus on looks. And yet people in the comments will always bring it back to ‘Omg you’re not average, you’re gorgeous!’. THAT DOESN’T CONTRIBUTE TO THE ACTUAL ISSUE WE’RE DISCUSSING.

As a dark-skinned mamak lady, when I met my non-Malaysian husband for the first time abroad, I convinced myself that he would never ever be interested in me due to my skin colour, and when he expressed wanting to be serious with me, I waited for the day he’d be honest and realise that he wanted someone fairer. We’re married for almost two years now and I’m still baffled by how much the environment in Malaysia affected my self-esteem.
