i hear the shock because when you read those laws in deuteronomy literally, it feels like the opposite of a loving god. but the literal sense is a protective veil for the internal spiritual message. in the spiritual sense, a "wife" represents the affection for truth and a "virgin" represents truth that hasn't been corrupted by selfish "proprium". the "execution" isn't about killing people, but a spiritual description of what happens to our mental anatomy when we claim to love truth but actually use it for selfish, adulterated ends, it destroys our ability to receive divine influx from the holy spirit. god permits these harsh literal laws to be written because ancient people were in such a hardened state that they could only be kept in spiritual equilibrium through external fear. it’s a form of "damage control" to prevent them from completely destroying their rationality before humanity was ready for the laws of love and charity taught by jesus. the goal of sanctification "regeneration" is to move past the "letter that kills" and understand the "spiritual methodology" of how god is trying to protect the purity of your mind.

In the Old Testament, God is seen as scary. There were probably people who didn’t have much relationship with God. I mean if you commit a sin, then good luck. But in the New Testament, Jesus showed us that God is loving, and allows people who believe in God to have a personal relationship with God. And also in the Old Testament, God didn’t allow much free will. But now, we have free will.

That quote is a misleading oversimplification of Deuteronomy 22 and ignores both context and how biblical law actually functioned. The passage is not saying every non-virgin bride is executed. It addresses a very specific legal scenario where a man publicly accuses his wife of deception and the charge must be proven beyond doubt. If the accusation is false the man is punished severely. If it were ever true it meant the woman had committed covenant fraud in a society where marriage functioned as a legal and economic contract, not modern dating. This was about protecting families from false charges and sexual exploitation, not about random moral policing. More importantly Israel’s law was not a timeless moral code applied mechanically but a civil law system governing an ancient nation. The same law set impossibly high evidentiary standards and there is no biblical record of this punishment ever being carried out. Scripture itself shows mercy overriding strict judgment repeatedly, and later prophets condemn empty legalism without justice. The Torah restrained violence in a brutal ancient world rather than encouraging it. Finally Christianity does not claim these civil penalties apply today. Jesus explicitly separates Israel’s covenant law from his kingdom and redirects justice toward mercy, repentance, and restoration. Quoting ancient civil law without context and mocking it as God’s character is not serious historical analysis. It is stripping a legal case from its world and pretending it was written for modern society when it never claimed to be.
