Kia ora I’m from Aotearoa/nz and I wonder if the Punga forest experience was a Patupaearehe or Tūrehu (fae/fairy/trickster) playing mind tricks on you .. they are well known for behaviour like that around here, honestly I wouldn’t be surprised if that was the case .. its very common knowledge amongst the Māori people!

Hi! Im native to New Zealand, Māori actually, personally I feel safer during the night here, I feel safe knowing I can just walk into the forest at night and not have to worry about snakes or bears, but I also feel protected somehow like the forest knows me kind of. But there are things I avoid too, like going to urupā (cemetery) and rivers (to avoid territorial taniwha)

A punga forest is a forest full of punga trees which is a native new zealand tree some know it as the sliver fern tree.
