Let’s go deeper than missing someone. Sometimes, losing a relationship hurts because you lose the person. But sometimes, it also hurts because you lose the version of yourself you experienced through them. You felt wanted. You felt important. You had someone to call, someone to share your day with, someone who made the future feel less frightening. And without them, you’re left facing a question you may have avoided for years: Who am I when nobody is reflecting back the version of myself I want to believe in? Maybe you didn’t just make them your partner. Maybe you made them the evidence that you were lovable, desirable, important, or finally worthy of being chosen. And when they left, it felt like they took those things with them. But they never owned those parts of you. You simply became accustomed to experiencing them through someone else’s attention. Here are three hard truths. 1. Being wanted is not the same as knowing your worth. Someone’s affection can feel validating, but if their attention becomes the foundation of your identity, their absence can make you question everything about yourself. You need to build a sense of worth that doesn’t collapse every time someone changes their mind. 2. You can miss the validation more than you realize. You may genuinely miss the person and still be grieving the reassurance they gave you. Be honest about both. Sometimes, the urge to reconnect isn’t just about love; it’s also an attempt to escape the feeling of being unwanted. 3. If you don’t learn who you are without external validation, you may keep confusing attraction with healing. A new person can make you feel alive again. Their attention can quiet your insecurities temporarily. But if you haven’t confronted the beliefs that make you feel incomplete alone, you may eventually ask that person to carry the same emotional weight as the last. So ask yourself: If nobody pursued me, praised me, or reassured me for the next six months, what would I still believe about myself? Would I continue building a life I’m proud of, or would I feel like my life had lost its meaning because nobody was there to witness it? Am I looking for a partner to share the life I’m building, or someone to convince me that I’m finally worth something? Don’t shame yourself for wanting love. Humans need connection. The goal isn’t to become so independent that you no longer need anyone. It’s to stop making another person’s ability to love you the deciding factor in whether you can love yourself. The deepest freedom isn’t when you no longer want to be chosen. It’s when not being chosen no longer convinces you that you were never worth choosing.
