My son took your advice about thanking his professors after the semester ended and he said they were so appreciative and told him that students rarely ever do that .

I do this at the start of every semester. Being neurodivergent it helps them understand me and the fact I learn different than the average student. A prof recommended I do that and it’s been great!

What I hear you saying, is that autistic students are right 🦆’d. Make friend-type relationships with teachers? 😂 Sir, peers don’t like us & teachers think we are questioning/talking down to them/being jerks when we ask multiple clarifying questions.

I went back to school in my 40s and I attended a traditional college program, I was the only older person; doing this made a HUGE difference. I was already on the field I wanted, but now I have a wider network.

I agree! I am shameless now. I send em an email first week of class introducing myself and telling them why I'm taking their class like, what sort of info I'm in it for. It's led to the most random convos. They've offered to help be on the lookout for research papers on particular topics I'm interested in. They provide additional resources on adjacent topics. It'll lead you down rabbit holes you never thought of! Really phenomenal stuff. Approach them with respect and consideration and they'll be an absolute treasure for that semester and far beyond.

I had great students (A). But when they ask for a letter of reference-I don’t really know them. They never really spoke to me or came to my office hours.

Sorry. It simply is not the best way to have success. The best way to have success is to have relationships with their fellow classmates. Seriously, your fellow classmates are significantly more important. (I am a professor)

Networking…. In college your professors are closer to colleagues than you think!!! I didn’t realize this until I was well out of college. Your friends/network is often your key!!
