The most normal thing you've probably ever seen me do! Alternating Dumbbell Curls. I quite often get asked if I ever do any normal exercises and the answer is yes. I actually do! This my favorite "basic" exercise for the biceps (using a pair of 40 lb dumbbells here). I like to do them one-arm at a time so that I can focus on one bicep at a time in terms of mind-muscle connection. This also takes advantage of the bilateral force deficit, which basically means you'll be a bit stronger when you do one side because your body doesn't have to split the nervous system activation. Some quick form notes based on what works for ME (your ideas on form might be different and that's fine!): 1. Don't do these fast and don't swing the weights up. This biceps love focused tension. Keep your knees soft and very slightly bent. 2. I like to supinate (rotating to a palms-up position, which is a major function of the bicep) as I curl up to the top. Some people like to keep the forearms supinated like mimicking a barbell curl, but this is how I like to do them. 3. I do raise my elbow up a little as I come to the top (and yes, that brings in the front delts a little bit). In my experience, this gives me a bit of extra contraction at the top. If you want to keep the upper arms pinned to your sides, go for it. 4. On the way down, keep the forearm supinated until the dumbbell is pretty close to the bottom. This helps keep tension on the biceps all the way down. 5. Some small adjustments in body position are fine to allow you to keep doing reps and push the biceps closer to failure but don't go into heaving and swinging and using a lot of body movement. That's pretty much it! The dumbbell curl is a great bicep exercise and even though I do all kinds of unconventional training, I do come back to the normal stuff regularly! --- Want to build your biceps fast?
