Not an excuse. Historically poor people are the most hospitable. Not feeding your guests is barbaric.

In vietnamese, we’ll be eating 4 potatoes for 5 pp then. How do you justify stuffing yourself, next to. A starving person

name ONE society that never experienced hardships through the course of their history? it's not really an excuse and barely counts as an explanation

The balkans were historically poor, but our people have the common decency to give food to our guests.

Whenever I moved to Sweden on my own, I befriended some people and would stay at there's over Christmas and New year's, absolutely grateful but I was actually raging they served me food, Swedish food is not edible lol, I'd chew on it and swallow it whilst trying to smile and say it's SOOOO good

it seems funny but ppl don't understand. In the nordics not only did people used to he poor but the LAND was also poor, nothing barely grew bc of cold and harsh weather and food resources were scarce and little, naturally that made people to strictly ration food to the point even guests couldn't eat unless it was invitation. Nowdays it is only cultural that many eat in their own houses and do not expect to fed at friends house unless invited, or its a dinner party etc.

Ok, but Sweden was NOT the only country that was historically poor, so I don’t buy that argument. My guess is that it has more to do with how their food is served. In many cultures, the food we cook are served on large plates or pans on the table, then family members take their own portions. Because of that it’s easier (for example) to divide a dinner meant for 5 people into 6 portions. They can’t really do that when their dinner portion consists of a fish and a potato? 🤷

Yeah no, in the middle east, nomadic groups such as bedouin people are known for being very hospitable, and even support their guess for several days before asking questions

It always felt like swedengate was more about finally finding a cultural practice to really criticize those smug Scandinavians for. Kind of like "yeah you have a high standard of living and a highly developed welfare state, but in other ways we still treat people better than you." People never seemed interested in the cultural context and how it might just be different from theirs.
