@beyondflorida: Dixieland Park was a big, flashy amusement and entertainment complex on Jacksonville’s Southbank that opened on March 9, 1907, proudly calling itself “Florida’s Playground” with rides, shows, gardens and even a silent film studio to draw winter tourists to the city. It was a short-lived giant in its day, gradually declining after a few years and gone by the time the U.S. entered World War I in 1917. #jacksonville #floridahistory

😩I’m so tired of hearing about the great thing that WERE in Jacksonville. It really could have been THAT city. But knowing that and seeing it now is just so upsetting bc the potential was so rich

DixieLand hosted a huge amount of silent films in that era. Conservatives hated it and caused political outrour. J.E.T. Bowden, the mayor at the time, was initially a supporter, but the political tide turned. Eventually, the city passed restrictive ordinances that essentially "ran" the movie business out

now the city is ran by a bunch of corporations who are turning all of our real estate into parking garages and "luxury apartments" 🥰

My dad told me stories about his older sister living in Jax would take him to the boardwalk this would have been in the late 40s or early 50s so not Dixieland . I’ve been searching for pics of it and always fall short .

It’s called Friendship park, still has a picnic area, walkway and fountain. Still a great place to have lunch or stroll.
