After you’ve listened to all of folklore I highly recommend watching the Long Pond studios documentary. She talks about each song. This is one of my favorites on this album. It’s about the previous owner of her RI house and how she kinda relates to her.

i love these songs of hers where she starts off talking about someone else and then it becomes about herself (there's another prominant one that i don't want to give away cause you haven't gotten to it yet) but it's just masterful storytelling!!!

It’s a song a song about Rebekah Harkness. The most famous woman who once owned her house in Rhode Island before she bought it years later. Folklore about her life. That’s where the “she stole his dog and died it key lime green” line comes into play.😆

So Holiday House is Taylor's home in RI. Her iconic 4th of July parties are held there. It's this massive old place up on the rocks overlooking the beach in a super private, elite neighborhood and the locals hated when she bought it. It had sat empty for decades cause nobody could afford it and then this little 22 year old comes up and buys it outright in cash. Suddenly the strip of beach it's on was no longer accessible to the public, cause it was Taylor's now. And she's hosting parties and living her life and getting noise complaint after noise complaint for just existing. Which lead to the quote from an interview "I'm sorry, was I being too loud? In my house? That I bought with my money from writing songs about my life?" Her story kinda eerily parallels the home's original owner's story. Rebekah Harkness married into money, was outcast from the social scene there, and when she lost her husband but got his fortune she spent the rest of her life building on to Holiday House, throwing these massive parties and funding and supporting the arts, which her neighbors felt was wasting away her husband's family's legacy. Taylor felt an instant kinship with Rebekah's story and decided Holiday House deserved another lifetime of a woman living in it and having too much fun upsetting her neighbors by not living up to their standards and "having a marvelous time ruining everything" in their stuffy circle.
