Being an end of life sanctuary, de@th is always going to be apart of the work we do, and while I am familiar with how it affects me… I like to learn more about how it affects the kids. I read in a recent article that not only do horses mourn the loss of the friend, but they miss the physical touch and comfort their friend provided. Doc, Arlo, Emmet and Bud were some of Max’s key herd mates and best friends.. and all of them have been sticking together this past week and have been comforting me as well. Today I was feeling pretty down.. the weather has been horrible this week with thunderstorms, downpours, high winds.. and just everything in the past week has felt a little hollow.. like something was missing. I think we all feel it. And in this moment I stepped in to hug these kids, Max’s herd (and Faye girl) I felt my spirits lift and I started hysterically laughing and crying at the same time. They all just kept grooming me… I had no cookies, nothing to offer them.. but each one took turns grooming me and surrounding me in what felt like the biggest hug. It’s like Max told them, hey guys watch out for mom a little extra.. she’s going to need it ❤️ And in this moment I knew… we never truly leave this world, our souls linger close by to our loved ones and watch over, showing up in the little signs and the happy moments. The connection is eternal. #grief #horserescue #horses #horsebehaviour #drafthorse #belgianhorse #horsemom #rescue #rescuelife #farmlife #farmgirl
