without the maths, imagine its an unbalanced wiight on a shaft pivoted at the centre and you want it balanced you need a countre weight of the same mass mounted 180⁰ opposite, imagine this counter-weight is a point mass of the same weight as the half or quarter circle, all you need is the length of the lever that gives an equal and opposite force if the shaft were in perfect balance, and the lever itself had no mass
