I’ve become very careful about people who speak badly about someone and then behave completely differently when that person walks into the room. Because eventually you realise... If they can do it to them, they can do it to you. Someone leaves the table and suddenly everybody has something to say. Things they trusted somebody enough to tell them privately. Then that same person walks back into the room... And everyone smiles. I genuinely cannot respect that. If I have a problem with you, I’d rather have an uncomfortable conversation with you directly than spend weeks having comfortable conversations about you with everybody else. That doesn’t mean you blindly defend your friends. If someone I love is wrong, I’ll tell them they’re wrong. But I want to tell them. Not ten other people who can do absolutely nothing about it. And I think one of the greatest signs of sincerity is what someone does with your name when you’re not in the room. Do they protect it? Do they shut down conversations that shouldn’t be happening? Do they give you the benefit of the doubt? Or do they contribute because gossip makes them feel included? Anybody can hug you when they see you. Anybody can call you brother. Anybody can smile across the table. But loyalty isn’t really tested in your presence. It’s tested in your absence. Pay attention to people who protect your name when there’s absolutely no chance you’ll ever know they did. Those are the people you want around you.
