The Roman ballista outranged the later trebuchet. Large siege versions could hurl stones weighing 80 to 100 lbs. upwards of 400 yards. The smaller "Scorpio" versions were reputed to throw a bolt (like a heavy spear) to around 6 or 700 yards!
