@floriangadsby: This happens from time to time when moving bone dry work around the studio and really, it’s a lesson that I should biscuit fire work more quickly to save it from potentially being chipped…   Here’s a black stoneware cup, the original being an experiment for a longer series on YouTube I’m creating, anyhow, last week as I organised pots I bashed the rim of this piece against a ware-board above it and as my pots are typically very thin, especially the rims, a knock like this is normally enough to fracture it, like seen at the beginning of this video. There are other times where the damage might even be unnoticeable, a hairline crack that you can’t easily see but when its biscuit fired or even glaze fired it becomes instantly obvious.   If, on the other hand, it’s only a very small chip, I can normally fix it. To do this, I flood the chipped area with slip, let it dry and contract and crack, if need be, then, I fill it again and again and again, until instead of a chip missing from the pot, there’s a growth of sorts protruding from it.   The next step is to fettle this growth back in-line with the rest of the pot, so that’s it’s flush with the original shape. I use a tungsten carbide tipped stone carver for this but sharp turning tools or a knife would work well too. With this cup, the damage was too great I think, hence why I had to throw and trim another one, and that’s what you’re seeing here.   #stoneware #clay #handmade #pottery #ceramics
