The RBMK was a good design for its era. It was cheap, simple, it needed no difficult to produce RPV, they could construct it with only simple tubes and graphite, it was easy to scale up (soviets had planned a 2400MW RBMK!!). The only flaw it had was specifically the graphite water displacers and very slow AZ5 speed, as well as gross and multiple operator errors in the Chernobyl incident which caused the accident.

there IS a contaiment shell on the rbmk 1000 gen 2 reactors if you look at the diagram you can see there is and on the sides and water so radioation doesn’t pollute the surroundings also the upper biological shield and the lower biological shield. there is less protection against the outside world for other reactors
