@jaxblade: Some quick late night thoughts I filmed last night on always trying to subvert expectations in writing when predictable endings aren’t necessarily always a bad thing #writing #narrative #fiction #story #anime

"subverting expectations" is how D&D fumbled GOT

Sometimes we want the ending that makes sense and is satisfying to the characters, theme, and world building!

The buildup to whup Ozai’s ahh was PHENOMENAL. It’s about the characters their transformation and their journeys.

genre romance always ends with a happy ending between the two characters and yet it's the most popular book genre

Simple story, complex characters. Any good piece of media knows character development is what makes or breaks a show.

I would even go so far as to say that a predictable ending can be GOOD writing. If the audience sees the ending coming as a natural progression of the characters' arcs and the logical conclusion of previous events, that's what you want.

tropes are tropes for a reason. a cliche is used for familiarity. as you said, the story told is what matters.

hadestown is entirely predicated on that you basically know how its going to end and yet it still makes people gasp when Orpheus turns around. because it has engaged you in deep ways

yes! one of the things I was taught in college, in the creative writing program, was to make your work "surprising yet inevitable" which is to say that you write something that is engaging and interesting and unique in the way that it discusses whatever you're trying to discuss but the conclusion when you look back at the work as a whole could only ever have been that conclusion because it is fundamentally built by the narrative as a whole.

do you think this is related to why a lot of villains are written to be sympathetic lately? it feels like it's been a while since there was a villain that was just that, no sad backstory or understandable reasoning, just evil.

Titanic is one of the predictable movies out there (or obvious reasons), but it didn’t erase the sheer terror of people trying to survive or the chemistry between Jack and Rose. And best believe I cried my eyes out when I first saw it

Same as life, we all know the end but it’s about how we get there 🙏 if the story is well written and executed the fans will follow!

Being unpredictable for the sake of it is a hinderance; unless the twist feels natural, there’s no need to shoehorn it in. Tell and an amazing story and a predictable ending will feel satisfying :)

Another thing to consider is that the build-up should make the audience WANT the ending even if it's predictable. If you're solely relying on your ending being unpredictable in order to be considered well done, you don't have your priorities straight

there are a lot of things and people to blame for this mindset, but the two biggest offenders are really the MCU and Game of Thrones. When it devolves into a contest to "outsmart" (read: trick and lie to) your audience so they don't get your endings, AND you're a generational piece of media that literally influences everything that comes after even unintentionally? Yeah, other writers are gonna pick that practice up.

one of the main qualities in good writing is foreshadowing. you should be able to predict the ending if you are paying attention. and if you weren't paying attention (or the foreshadowing is really subtle) then it adds more depth during rereads.

I think attack on titan does this beautifully. It has so many twists and subversions but season 3 ends exactly how you think it will at the beginning, but there is another season that just wrecks you. That is a great way to be subversive

Beowulf tells the same story two times back to back and it’s still one of the foundational works of fiction.
