the main moment I can remember at least was in high school my junior year- I was taking pre-calculus and at the beginning of the year I expressed to my teacher that I was really worried about taking this class because when I had taken geometry in my freshman year I had almost failed that class and I had struggled to understand the material (didnt help that my freshman year was when covid started and the geometry teacher I had had a strange teaching style that didnt work for me) - my pre-calculus teacher actually paid attention to my worries- and when I did do well in her class and got straight As because her teaching style was so engaging (it was the first time I had ever looked forward to a math class) she took note of that- and in my high school teachers could elect one of their students to be the "student of the month" and during my last month of that class she announced to our class that she was going to nominate me because she remembered I had been so worried about taking her class and I had done phenomenal with all my work. it meant the world to me that she had remembered me saying that at the beginning of the school year because growing up it felt like adults didnt really listen or pay attention to anything I said or felt- I didnt win student of the month but that didnt matter to me, I was just happy she thought of me. i dont remember a lot of my teachers but I will always remember her.

when I started therapy. they told me what I was really feeling without repeating everything and understood all my feelings. felt like that was the first time someone actually listened to me

When I needed to confront them about something embarrassing but instead of reacting with contempt like I expected, they reassured me and reinforced the importance of openly talking about it. Self regulating their reaction in that moment, controlling their anger, and instead directing it towards making sure I felt heard still sticks to me to this day.

when i was like 6 to 8 i had an aunt that used to gift all the children with books, when she asked me what book I wanted, i told her i wanted something about biology and instead of giving me a simple animals book, she gave me a real educational book that gave me a lot of information i was craving i felt like she was the first adult that understood my interests

my year 8 maths teacher. the way she spoke about my mathematical abilities was totally different than anyone in the past. I said I won't do the work because I already know how to do it, she said "I know you do. I'd like you to show me how well you can do it, just so I don't have to keep an eye on you. maybe do something harder that no one else is doing". that lit a fire in me that I still have at 18 years old

I don't remember much about my childhood, but I think it's when my grandma always listened to me talking about anything I had on my mind. She didn't really understand what I was talking about, but she still did listen and she was really interested. She didn't push me aside, almost never said I was too loud (only when I was playing Minecraft with my classmate. I still have no clue how loud I was), and she never said my emotions were too much. That's something I didn't get from my parents or older sister. (And I wrote some really bad poetry about that back in the 7th grade) No wonder I wouldn't wanna go home for weeks lol Not so long ago she told me I taught her how to play chess btw. I love her really really really much And I'm sobbing rn

When my principal did an Career interview and I told him my problem of choosing on what I want(animation) or something that could benefit me(psychology and my mom wants me to), I wanted to pursue animation but I also like psychology but not much as a career, he told me that he too was also in the same situation where he studied biology because it was part of his interest but he wasn’t happy with the career so he choose to be a teacher and he loved doing it more than being a biologist, he encouraged me to take animation courses because that’s what I see myself more to be in the future :3

in the 9th grade, my highschool guidance counsellor visited me in hospital to ask me how he could make my transition back to school easier, it’s been over 7 years since ive seen him last and i just applied for my masters in counselling hoping to be the same comfort to struggling youth :))))))

My counselor in high school. She wasn't perfect, but she wanted to make me feel seen and appreciated for who I was. I have never felt so safe, neither before or since.

understood? probably never. strange child, strange adult. but seen... grade school teachers did a lot. expressing their understanding of my struggles and proficiencies, even if they didn't have much resources to accommodate. trusting with responsibilities. getting to know the class and showing personal care about us as individuals. and asking for music recs in the higher grades! also my youth choir teacher complimenting my strong alto capabilities 😁
